Things That Make You Go, Hmmm...

same sex marriage warningImage by sungo via FlickrFor the first time the "gay issue" is being framed in terms that are making the right wing uncomfortable. They are used to getting laws like Prop 8 passed in order to tell us all to shut up and move to the back of the bus then having us to quietly do that. This year, that strategy backfired and LGBT Americans aren't sitting down and taking their lumps. Even more disturbing to them is the fact that these right wingers are now finding themselves squarely outside the mainstream of American culture as they have to defend indefensible and irrational arguments.

In this backlash they are now wishing it would just all go away. Here are some quotes I've run across recently that make me go... "hmmm?"

Why do movies about gay rights have to mention homosexuals?
"Could've understood the jest (sic) of the movie without being so blatant about their homosexuality. Enjoyed the political drama and the hope that Mr. Milk tried to convey. Several scenes were very uncomfortable to watch so I wouldn't recommend this's overrated even though the story is unique and true." - Blessedmom from Kansas City in a user review of Milk on the website.
I don't believe sex or love exists and you can't make me!
"It seems that lately our society has been bombarded by the gay issue, either signs like this one or gays trying to marry or people protesting and/or attacking others who have different feelings or beliefs. Personally, I'm tired of it all. If you want to be gay, fine - be gay but don't throw it in our face. On the other hand, if you want to be straight then be straight but don't throw it in our face." - Christine-595127 commenting on an anti-gay billboard that was removed after an outcry.
Cake or Death? Donuts or Civil Rights?
"Of course not. I have always treated them with respect. When they come and wanna talk to me, I talk to 'em. When the protesters came, we served them water and donuts." - Right Wing Mega-Church pop star, Rick Warren when asked if he was homophobic.
So there are just a few. I've found others that are very long and rambling like the guy who is in "favor" of Civil Unions but thinks gay people should just shut up and take whatever the straight people hand them when they feel like it. He even goes on to lecture us about what should be important to us and protecting our relationships doesn't top his list, of course.

Anyway, it's fun to see how uncomfortable all this makes the very people who brought it to national attention with Prop 8 and Prop 102 and the failed Constitutional Convention in Connecticut. It's even more fun to watch the supposed "allies" squirm because now they're being forced to put up or shut up instead of being closet bigots as well as that extreme minority in the LGBT community who are actually enablers of hate and who "just want to get along" with the gay bashers and bigots.

Interesting times, these...
